Tree Planting & InstallationNevada & Placer County
Right tree, right place — professional species selection and installation by ISA Certified Arborist David Powell throughout the Sierra Nevada foothills.
The Right Tree Planted the Right Way
Planting a tree is a long-term investment in your property — one that can add significant value, shade, and ecological benefit over decades. But that investment depends entirely on planting the right species in the right location with proper technique. The wrong tree in the wrong spot will either underperform or eventually become a problem: roots in your foundation, branches on your roof, or a species that can't survive the summer dry season without constant supplemental water.
ISA Certified Arborist David Powell brings species knowledge specific to the Sierra Nevada foothills — the elevation range, soil types, fire risk zones, and climate variations across Nevada and Placer Counties. Whether you're replacing a tree that was removed for fire clearance, adding shade to a new home, or establishing a native oak woodland on a larger parcel, we'll help you select species that will thrive in your specific conditions and serve your goals for the next 50+ years.
Our planting service covers everything from species selection and nursery sourcing to proper hole preparation, soil amendment, installation, staking, and first-year watering guidance. We also offer follow-up plant health care to support establishment and long-term tree vigor.
Professional Installation — From Selection to Establishment Care
Every tree planting project starts with the right species for the site.
Plant Right the First Time
Tree planting mistakes are expensive — wrong species, wrong depth, wrong location. An ISA Certified Arborist gets it right from the start.
Tree Planting FAQs
What homeowners and property owners in Nevada County most often ask about tree planting and species selection.
The Sierra Nevada foothills have a Mediterranean-influenced climate with hot, dry summers and wet winters — well-suited to native species like valley oak (Quercus lobata), blue oak (Quercus douglasii), ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa), California buckeye, and western redbud. Non-native adapted species that also perform well include pistache, sweetgum, zelkova, Chinese elm, and drought-tolerant fruit trees like fig and olive. David Powell can recommend the right species based on your elevation, soil type, sun exposure, and goals.
Fall and early winter (October through February) are generally the best planting windows for most species in the Nevada County foothills. Cooler temperatures and winter rainfall allow trees to establish roots before the stress of the summer dry season. Container-grown trees can be planted year-round with proper irrigation, but spring and summer planting requires significantly more watering attention.
We can source and supply trees directly, or install trees you've already purchased. When we source trees, we select healthy nursery stock appropriate for your site conditions and intended use. If you've already purchased a tree, we're happy to provide professional installation — proper planting depth, soil amendment, staking if needed, and watering guidance are all part of the service.
Consistent deep watering during the first summer is the single most important factor for new tree survival. We provide specific watering schedules based on species, soil type, and tree size. Mulching the root zone (keeping mulch away from the trunk) and avoiding fertilizer in the first year are also important. We walk you through establishment care at the time of planting so you know exactly what the tree needs.
Yes — and replanting after fire clearance is one of the smartest things you can do for your property's long-term value and ecology. We can recommend fire-resistant species that won't recreate the same fuel hazard, properly spaced to maintain adequate clearance. Native oaks, for example, are considerably more fire-resistant than pines and can be excellent replacement trees in many foothill settings.
