Don't Let Stumps Become a Long-Term Problem

A leftover stump may seem harmless, but it creates ongoing issues on your property. Stumps attract termites, bark beetles, and carpenter ants — pests that can migrate from the rotting wood into nearby structures. Species that resprout from the base — like some oaks, willows, and fruit trees — will push new growth repeatedly unless the root crown is fully removed. And stumps left in lawn areas are a mowing hazard and an eyesore that lowers curb appeal.

At Powell Arbor Solutions, we use commercial stump grinders to remove stumps below the soil surface — typically 6–12 inches down, which eliminates the visible structure and the majority of the root crown. The result is a flat, clean area you can replant, sod over, or simply leave as lawn. We handle all cleanup and can haul away the wood chips or leave them for you to use as mulch.

Stump Grinding FAQs

Answers to the questions we hear most from homeowners across Nevada and Placer Counties.

Stump grinding prices depend on the stump's diameter, wood hardness, and site accessibility. Most residential stumps run $150–$400. Multiple stumps done in the same visit can reduce the per-stump cost. We provide free on-site written estimates — contact us and we'll assess your specific situation.

We typically grind 6–12 inches below the soil surface, which is sufficient to eliminate visible structure, allow lawn mowing over the area, and prevent most species from resprouting. If you plan to replant in the same spot, we can grind deeper to remove more of the root crown on request.

We clean up the grindings and debris after each stump. You can keep the wood chips for mulch, or we can haul them away — just let us know your preference when we schedule the job.

Most species will not resprout after proper stump grinding because the root crown is ground below the point where growth buds exist. Certain species — particularly willow, Chinese pistache, and some oaks — can push new growth from lateral roots even after grinding. If regrowth is a concern, David Powell can advise on the specific species and whether additional treatment is warranted.

We can grind stumps immediately after tree removal or return at a later date — whatever works for your schedule. There's no waiting period for freshly cut stumps. If you're adding stump grinding to an existing tree removal job, just mention it when we provide your estimate and we'll include it in the same visit.
